Solar and Lunar Eclipse Images

Partial Lunar Eclipse of September 17, 2024

I took the following pictures from the parking lot of the Baker Wetlands Discovery Center in Lawrence, KS. I used my 80mm Bausch and Lomb telescope and my Olympus TG6 camera in afocal mode with a 40mm eyepiece to capture the images. I created an animation from the images that can be viewed on my animations page.

Partial Solar Eclipse of April 8, 2024

I took the following pictures from the back yard of our house in Lawrence, KS. I used my 5 inch refractor and ASI1600MM monochrome camera to capture ten frames every two minutes, using an exposure of 1/1000 second. In Lawrence the eclipse was about 90 percent at its peak. I created an animation from the still images that can be viewed on my animations page.

Partial Solar Eclipse of October 14, 2023, 16:30 UT

I took the following picture from the back yard of our house in Lawrence, KS. I used an Olympus TG-6 point and shoot camera pointed at the Sun when the clouds thinned enough for the Sun to briefly appear. In Lawrence the eclipse was about 60 percent at its peak.

I took the following pictures from the Baker Wetlands Discovery Center in Lawrence, KS. I used a Bausch & Lomb 80mm F/10 Maksutov-Cassegrain mounted on a photo tripod and an Olympus TG-6 point and shoot camera held at the eyepiece.



Total Solar Eclipse of August 21, 2017

I traveled to York Nebraska in my Coachmen RV to view the eclipse. I stayed at an RV campground that was adjacent to I-80. On eclipse morning the weather was clear at sunrise but heavy cirrus clouds moved in by mid morning so much of the eclipse was obscured by the clouds. I was able to capture some images through the clouds. The following images were taken with my homemade 127 mm f/5.5 refractor and a ZWO ASI1600mm-Cool CMOS camera. The lens for the telescope was purchased from Surplus Shed. TheSky X with the camera add-in was used for image acquisition.

The following are photographs of my equipment setup and the RV park during totality. I did manage to capture an image of the diamond ring effect through a thinning of the clouds using my hand held digital camera.



Total Lunar Eclipse of September 28, 2015

The lunar eclipse was photographed using afocal projection with a Kodak C743 digital camera, 8 inch Schmidt-Cassegrain, and a 40mm eyepiece. The exposures ranged from 1/135 second to 1/2 second.

The lunar eclipse was photographed using afocal projection with a Kodak C743 digital camera, 6 inch Newtonian reflector, and a 40mm eyepiece. The exposure setting were from 1/150 to 1/200 second. The Moon was setting in the trees so I was only able to capture the beginning of the eclipse.

The solar eclipse was photographed using afocal projection with a Kodak C743 digital camera, 60mm Coronado Ha telescope. The exposure setting was 1/16 second. The picture was taken around 22:00 to 22:30 UT.



Total Lunar Eclipse of October 8, 2014

The lunar eclipse was photographed using afocal projection with a Kodak C743 digital camera, 6 inch Newtonian reflector, and a 32mm eyepiece. The exposure setting before second contact with the umbra was 1/4 second. After second contact with the umbra the exposure setting was 1/2 second.

The lunar eclipse was photographed using afocal projection with a Kodak C743 digital camera, 6 inch Newtonian reflector, and a 32mm eyepiece. The exposure setting before second contact with the umbra was 1/8 second. After second contact with the umbra the exposure setting was 1/2 second.



Annular Solar Eclipse of May 20, 2012.

The annular solar eclipse was photographed using eyepiece projection with an Olympus OM1, 800mm B&L lens, and a 25mm eyepiece. Kodak TMax 400 ASA film. Exposures from 1/15 sec to 1/30 sec for most of the eclipse and then longer exposures of 1/4 and 1/2 seconds were used when the Sun was approaching the horizon. During the first part of the eclipse the lens what a bit out of focus. I refocused when I loaded the second roll of film.



Annular Solar Eclipse of May 20, 2012.

The following annular solar eclipse images were photographed using an Olympus OM1 and an 8 inch SCT. Kodak TMax 400 ASA film. Exposures from 1/1000 sec to 1/250 sec. The roll of film came off the spool, so I had to wait until I returned home to unload the film from the camera.

The following annular solar eclipse images were photographed using an Olympus OM1 and a Coronado 60mm solar telescope. Kodak Technical Pan film (ASA 50). Exposures from 1/30 sec to 1/4 sec.



Lunar Eclipse of August 28, 2007

The following lunar eclipse images were photographed using an OM1 with a 500mm telephoto lens and 2X doubler mounted piggyback on my Meade 8 inch SCT (latter images) and on a tripod (earlier images). Fuji 800 ASA film. Exposures from 1/125 sec to 1 sec. The images on the bottom row were taken with an Olympus D-460 digital camera held up to a 40mm eyepiece on my 8 inch Meade SCT.

The following lunar eclipse images were photographed using an Olympus D-460 digital camera held up to a 40mm eyepiece on my 8 inch Meade SCT.



Lunar Eclipse of March 3, 2007.

The following lunar eclipse image was photographed using an Olympus OM1 camera with a 500mm telephoto lens mounted on a tripod. Fuji 800 ASA film. Exposure was about 1/2 second. The photograph was taken at the Farpoint observatory southwest of Topeka, KS. In this photograph the moon was emerging from the earth's shadow as the moon was rising.

The following lunar eclipse images were photographed using an Olympus OM1 camera and a 3 inch Questar telescope from the Central Michigan University Observatory.

The following solar eclipse images were photographed before and after totality using a 3 inch Questar telescope (from the Central Michigan University Observatory) fitted with a 35mm camera.

The following lunar eclipse images were photographed with a Celestron C8 and Nikon-F 35 mm camera. Film used was Kodak High Contrast Copy film, which exaggerates the Earth's shadow and the lunar maria.

The following lunar eclipse image was photographed with a Celestron C8 and Nikon-F 35 mm camera. Film used was Kodak Plus-X film. The image was taken after the High Contrast Copy film images and shows more normal contrast.
